Your Car Flooded in Underground Parking. Who Pays?

If Your Car Floods, Are You Actually Covered?

Imagine walking downstairs and seeing this...

You parked your car in your condo’s underground garage before going to bed.

Heavy rain hits overnight.

The next morning, you go downstairs and your car is sitting in water.

Your first thought might be:

“The condo building has insurance. They’ll cover it.”

Unfortunately, that may not be the case.

The condo’s insurance usually isn’t for your car

The condo corporation’s policy generally protects the building and common areas.

Your vehicle is different.

If flooding damages your car in an underground parking garage, the claim would generally need to go through your auto insurance policy, assuming you purchased the appropriate coverage.

And this is where one small coverage decision becomes very important.

Do you have comprehensive coverage?

Basic liability coverage does not generally protect your own vehicle against flood damage.

Flood damage may be covered when your policy includes optional physical damage protection such as:

✅ Comprehensive
✅ All Perils
✅ Specified Perils

The exact coverage depends on your policy.

This is why removing comprehensive coverage simply to lower your monthly premium can sometimes come back to hurt you.

A flooded car can become a total loss very quickly

Water and modern vehicles do not mix well.

Think about how many electronics, sensors, computers, wiring systems, and safety components are inside today's cars.

Floodwater can cause:

• Electrical failures
• Engine or transmission damage
• Corrosion
• Mould
• Damage that may not appear immediately

And if water reaches high enough, the vehicle may no longer be safe to repair.

If your car is already sitting in water...

Do not try to start it.

Starting a water-exposed vehicle can cause additional engine damage.

Once it is safe:

✅ Take pictures and videos
✅ Contact your insurance company or broker
✅ Have the vehicle professionally inspected
✅ Do not drive through standing water trying to retrieve it

If severe rainfall is expected and you park underground, moving your vehicle to higher ground early can be one of the simplest precautions you take.

The lesson

Most people think about collision coverage when they think about protecting their car.

But your vehicle can be destroyed without another car ever touching it.

Flood.

Fire.

Theft.

Vandalism.

Falling objects.

That is why it is worth understanding what your comprehensive coverage actually protects before deciding to remove it.

Saving a few dollars on your premium is great.

Saving money by removing coverage you actually need is a different story.
