You Work From Home. Your Policy May Not Know That.

A home policy is written for a residence, not a business address.

Millions of Canadians now work from a spare bedroom or a basement office.

Most home policies were never updated to reflect it.

For a lot of people that is fine. For some, there is a real gap.

Usually not a problem

An employee working on a laptop for someone else's company, with no clients visiting and no inventory in the house, is generally within a normal home policy.

Even then, it is worth a quick mention at renewal.

Where gaps appear

• Business equipment beyond the policy's limited allowance
• Clients or customers coming to the home
• Inventory or stock stored in the house or garage
• Professional services delivered from home, where liability follows the work
• A home-based business with employees

What can close it

✅ A home business endorsement for smaller operations
✅ A separate commercial policy where the exposure is larger
✅ Confirming your contents limit reflects the equipment actually in the house

A two-minute conversation

Tell your broker what you actually do from home.

Most of the time, the answer is "you are fine, here it is in writing."

That sentence is worth having before a claim, not during one.
