You Moved and Didn't Tell Your Insurer. Now What?

Your address is one of the biggest rating factors on the policy.

Moving is chaos.

Between the truck, the keys and the utilities, telling the insurance company slides to the bottom of the list.

It should be near the top, and here is why.

Your postal code prices your policy

Auto premiums in Ontario are heavily influenced by where the vehicle is parked overnight.

Claims frequency, theft rates and repair costs all vary by area.

An old address on file means the policy is rated on the wrong information.

What can go wrong

• A claim where the details do not match the policy
• A re-rate, sometimes retroactive
• Home coverage still pointed at a house you no longer own
• A gap between when one policy ends and the next begins

It sometimes works in your favour

Moving out of a high-cost area can lower your premium.

I have had clients owed a refund who simply never called.

The moving-week checklist

✅ Tell your broker your closing or possession date, in advance
✅ Confirm coverage overlaps both homes on moving day
✅ Ask whether belongings are covered while in transit or in storage
✅ Update the address on both auto and home or tenant policies
✅ Re-check your bundle discount — it may change

One call, ideally two weeks before the truck arrives.

Two minutes twice a week. Smarter with money in Ontario.
