Thanksgiving Isn't Expensive. The Week Around It Is.

Same table, same people, noticeably less money.

A client told me last October that Thanksgiving had cost her four hundred dollars.

I asked what she bought.

A turkey, sides, and a pie. Maybe ninety dollars of food.

The other three hundred was everything around it - gas to her sister's, a hostess gift, a last-minute grocery run on the Sunday, and the dinner out on the Monday because nobody wanted leftovers again.

The meal is not the expense

Grocery bills get the attention because that's the number you see on one receipt.

But a long weekend is four days of ordinary spending compressed into one memory. The costs that actually move the total are the ones that don't look like Thanksgiving:

  • Fuel for a drive you wouldn't otherwise make

  • The second grocery trip for what you forgot

  • Eating out on the stat Monday

  • Anything bought in a hurry

Where the real money sits this month

If you're driving to see family this weekend, two things are worth ten minutes before you go.

Check whether anyone else will be driving your car. A cousin taking it to the store is covered differently than you think, and it's worth knowing before rather than after.

And check your renewal date. Nine Ontario insurers have approved rate reductions this fall. Whether you see one depends entirely on where your renewal falls.

The Rate Board - week of Oct 8

Co-operators -3.73% · in effect since Sep 11
Allstate -1.64% and Pembridge -1.45% · in effect since Sep 15
The Personal -5.3% and Certas -2% · landing Nov 28

A cut only reaches you if your renewal falls on or after the effective date. One day earlier and you wait a year.

The honest version

A holiday weekend is not a budgeting failure. It's four days of life happening at once.

What you can control:

  • Fill up before the long weekend, not during it

  • One grocery trip, written list

  • Know who's driving your car before you hand over the keys

  • Check your renewal date while you're thinking about money anyway

The turkey was never the problem.
